 Choosing Healthful Foods When Time Is of the Essence 



The United States of America is in a dire time crunch. There is a higher need for a work-life-nutrition balance than for the still-luxurious work-life balance for tens of millions of working parents. Despite the growing need for nutritious food, no practical solution has emerged to help individuals find more time in their already hectic schedules.

My already hectic life has become even more chaotic as a result of this predicament. As was first brought to public attention in the early 1980s and has since grown increasingly apparent in the two decades thereafter, this has further highlighted stress as America’s top health concern [i].

In many cases, a cascade of negative health and nutrition outcomes follows the establishment of a connection between stress and time mismanagement, which is now practically axiomatic[ii]. Most people have either experienced this terrible cycle firsthand or have seen it tragically play out in the lives of those closest to them, whether it be friends, family, or coworkers.

Because the body isn't getting the vital minerals and vitamins it needs, stress can and frequently does induce people to eat poorly[iii], which in turn causes even more stress. During this time, additional psychological tension related to issues with body image is released, as unhealthy eating is frequently linked to unwanted weight gain.

Even though this would be sufficient to establish this as a serious issue if the cycle ended here, it keeps going and gets worse.

"Emotional eating" might be a coping mechanism for people who are struggling with negative body image or who have gained weight. Emotional eating is responsible for almost three quarters of all cases of overeating [iv]. Emotional eating is often associated with unhealthy comfort foods that are high in saturated fat, which in turn leads to even greater nutritional deficiencies. Malnutrition, obesity, and, in more instances than the typical person realizes, suicide are common outcomes of this unbroken cycle of stress.

Stress, insufficient time, and unhealthy eating habits cause unfathomable misery and suffering for tens of millions of Americans every day. The negative cycle described in the previous lines, which is almost clinical, fails to do justice to this reality. No words could ever do justice to the destruction this feedback loop produces, but within the scope of this post, I think it's safe to say that it's a major problem.

An overnight cure does not exist for an issue of this scale, and anyone proposing such a solution deserves the strongest criticism. The first step in solving a problem of this magnitude and complexity is pinpointing its origin; the second is to implement solutions that lessen the impact of the problem or, better yet, prevent it from happening altogether.

Time constraints are one of the main reasons this issue persists. People in the United States would be less likely to fall into a downward spiral of poor nutrition if they actually had more time on their hands, or at least felt like they had. Consequently, this difficulty can be partially alleviated with a solution that operates on this level, the level of time.

This realization that time is crucial has led to the development of several dietary supplements. Even though many of these supplements are quite easy to swallow, many of them do not supply the vitamins and minerals that the body needs.

Also, many so-called "energy bars" are incredibly calorie and carb heavy, which can cause emotional eating and weight gain if used carelessly. The fact that the marketing of nutritional supplement products has focused more on making money through catchy slogans and clever advertising than on assisting people in saving time, eating healthy, and avoiding potentially life-altering negative stress cycles is even more regrettable. The abundance of nutritious supplements that are actually just fancy names for candy bars is proof of this.

But there are products that have stepped up to this moral challenge; these are products that have been developed in response to a real need in society, by nutritional experts who have identified a need and created a practical solution.

Adults, children, athletes, sedentary people, and everyone in between who is short on time will benefit most from goods that provide a comprehensive and balanced source of nourishment. Additionally, when time is of the essence, these premium items should supply a variety of necessary nutrients, allowing the nutrition source to be relied upon as a full meal.

It will take more than a single product or set of products to fix America's time-starved problem. Although a definitive answer to this complicated problem is still difficult, it is obvious that addressing the root causes, rather than just treating the symptoms, will be an important component of any eventual solution. A powerful ally in this endeavor will be nutritional goods that provide solutions for meals and supplements based on scientific research.
